Did anyone else notice the ‘art’ put into this interview of Edward Snowden? I don’t know how up the filmographer and/or interviewer are on their Roman Gods and Goddesses, but I just wonder if they are sending a sublte message through the way they filmed Edward Snowden. If you notice in the interview, Edward Snowden is seen looking forward, towards us, but behind him, his reflection is looking backwards. Is this a reference to the Roman God of the New year, Janus? Here is a little bit on Janus from that ubquitous source of information on the web, Wikipedia:
In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus (Latin: Ianus) is the god of beginnings and transitions, thence also of gates, doors, passages, endings and time. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. The Romans named the month of January (Ianuarius) in his honor.
Janus presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace. The doors of his temple were open in time of war, and closed to mark the peace. As a god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, and in his association with Portunus, a similar harbor and gateway god, he was concerned with travelling, trading and shipping.
I think a fair case can be made that the filmographer was getting some hidden meaning into this interview, that Edward Snowden is a sort of modern day Janus (sans the divinity). He symbolizes the end of concealment and the beginning of an uncharted era, to be determined by the degree to which Americans react to this abuse of power. Should be telegraph a lack of comittment and resolve to defend our freeedom, it will be the beginning of an era of government intrustion and opppression. Should we vocally resist the government’s attempt to create an omnipotent government (for our protection, of course), then we will begin an era that will fundamentally undo the work of the Bush-Obama administration.
Here is my meme on this- enjoy:
